The Red-Crowned crane has one of the most beautiful dances in the bird world. The reason is because they have a pair of beautiful long and thin legs,just like the Ballet dancers. Crane dances have a very important purpose. Adult cranes live in male-female pairs, and these dances help strengthen the relationship between the two birds.

In 2007, the red-crowned crane has come out as the only candidate for the national bird for China after a public poll. The State Forestry Bureau has submitted this result of the poll to the State Council. So after then, the red crowned crane has been called as our national bird. The United States also has designated the bald eagle as its national bird 200 years ago.
The Amur river and Khanka lake areas are the places where inhabitat the red crowned cranes, and these two areas lies along the border of China and Russia.So these two countries have been cooperating to protect this rare crane.

In China, Red crowned crane is treated as a lucky bird, c’z in Chinese culture, the saints always use a red crowned crane as their mount. So red crowned crane is also an embody of longevity because the saints are regarded to be immortal. That’s why you find a lot of people give presents to senior citizens which are decorated with feature of red crowned crane, it is a way to express wishes to the old people.
