China Grand Canal

The world-known Great Canal is the longest and oldiest manual-canal in the world. It located in China and linking Beijing and Hangzhou, hence the Chinese name of the canal,which is Jinghang Grand canal. Jing means Beijing and Hang means Hangzhou.

The Grand Canal was first brought under construction during the Wu Dynasty in 486 BC. You can imagine how hard it could be to complete such a huge project in the ancient times.Then it was extended during the Qi Dynasty and then again during the Sui Dynasty under the reign of Emperor Yangdi. Therefore, it was not totally completed after hundreds of years. It can be called as another wonder in China as well as in the whole world.

The Grand Canal found in China is not only the oldest, but also the longest among all the canals in the entire world. In fact, the length of this canal surpasses the world’s second and third largest canals put together, being the Panama Canal and the Suez. Today, the length of the Grand Canal is approximately 1,200 miles long.

In the feudal society in China, teh Grand canal is a very important way to transport the rich and good grains to the capital Beijing. And Hangzhou area is hailed as a land flowing with fish and rice. That’s why the Grand canal is that useful in the old times.

But because of the wars and transient in the history, the Grand canal has been jamed in some area.
